Denis Cody – Community Volunteer

Retired secondary principal, Denis Cody, was well-known and much loved in the Foothills Community. Sadly, Denis passed away in June after a short illness.

The Foothills was one of the several volunteer roles that Denis took on in his very active retirement. He enjoyed writing about the people and places that he felt passionate about in his community. Denis was a generous contributor to the Foothills for over 4 years and his volunteer peers and the staff at Coonara valued his friendship and talent. He will be missed by all of us.

Denis was also a valued volunteer at Eastern Health for over three years and was a great advocate for the cardiac and heart failure programs run at the Angliss Hospital.

Volunteering on Tuesdays in the Cardiac Program, Denis set up the gymnasium for the program, preparing name tags, exercise sheets and selecting music. He arranged equipment for the clients’ exercise regimes, collated cardiac and heart failure program evaluations and sourced current educational materials for the patients.

As a former patient himself, Denis wanted to help others and this was great for our patients as Denis knew what they were experiencing and gave them hope that they could achieve what he had.

Rehabilitation Coordinator, Georgie Shoebridge recalled a time when Denis took a ‘difficult’ client under his wing. At the end of the program when clients were awarded certificates of participation, Denis wrote a poem on the back of this man’s certificate. The client was visibly moved, saying it was the only certificate and poem he had ever received. This was one of the many ways Denis touched people’s lives. He was a special person and is greatly missed by all who knew him at Eastern Health.

From the Editor

Welcome to the first of the digital editions of The Foothills community news. Thanks to our wonderful team of volunteers that has put this edition together. Many are long term volunteers who you will have followed over several years and others are new writers inspired by the opportunities of the new digital edition.

We are keen to grow the Foothills with your contributions. If you have a club, a school or an interest that you’d like to tell us about each quarter then please contact me so we can arrange for your own column. We also welcome photos and quick news stories that we can use to update the Foothills between editions. Send those contributions and messages to thefoothills@coonarahouse.org.au.

Thanks and happy reading.

Regards
